Denotative/Connotative Posters - Tadao Ando

Challenge
The challenge was to research and learn about the Japanese architect Tadao Ando, and create two posters, a denotative, and a connotative poster. Restricted to only black and white and no imagery.

Denotative
The denotative meaning of a word is its main meaning, not including the feelings and ideas that people may connect with that word

Connotative
The connotative meaning of a word includes the feelings and ideas that people may connect with that word.
Solution
For the denotative poster, I placed the information about the architect in a way that guides the viewers eyes through the information. Focusing on negative space to give the text breathing room, but to also balance the composition in a visually appealing way.

For the connotative poster I looked at the carving technique that he uses in this architecture, while also looking at the sense of structure in the architecture. I represent these ideas through the use of a grid and fully justified text, and using the letters of his name to carve into the body text.
